Middlewood is mentioned in the Domesday book.
Earl Harold held it 2 Hides.
It was also a mediaeval Township, which had at least one church and Several chapels of ease.
Research has revealed it was owned by the Higgins Family from 1777 to 1907 when the Middlewood estate was sold in parcels.
The present day maps show that many of the original fields in 177 remain unchanged today in shape or size, some have never been ploughed.

The Gold wildlife action award has been achieved by working with Hereford Nature Trust, to make the plot of land adjoining Cottage Farm more appealing to the naturally occurring Flora and Fauna.
Native Orchard Trees have been planted along with other large shrubs and trees attractive to birds and butterflies.
Natural habitats for insects and animals, along with bird nesting boxes and Mason bee tubes are all part of an on going project.

Our Green Business Award is achieved through bulk buying every day products to reduce packaging waste, re-cycling as many items as possible. Encouraging our guests to help us be economical with electric and water consumption.

Golden Valley Towards Hay Bluff

Arthur's Stone at Dorstone

Three walks of varying lengths have been designed, which can be started from the gate, therefore once you arrive you don't have to take the car out unnecessarily to enjoy this beautiful countryside. We are also adjacent to The Wye Valley Walk and make a good base for a night stop en route.
Things to do! Well,
Hay has book, gallery, craft and clothes shops, Herefordshire has numerous gardens, castles, farm centres, cider making, churches, Mappa Mundi, and many more.

What we don't have are motorways and long queues, in fact the nearest set of traffic lights is 18 miles away.

What ever you decide to do the peaceful Herefordshire countryside is a good place to start, and with a comfortable homely base at Cottage farm all you have to do now is decide what to do first.
Go on spoil yourself !
